A flash flood caused by heavy rainfall has claimed the life of the Imam of Al-Burhan Masjid in Gombe, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, shortly after leading Taraweeh prayer at the mosque.
Malam Bello died while trying to save his sister-in-law’s car from being submerged in the flood. His lifeless body was found underneath a bridge at Kumbiya-Kumbiya area, after three hours of searching.
The Monday evening downpour, which lasted for over two hours, also claimed the lives of two other people, injured many and destroyed over 20 houses. Many people were still missing at the time of filing this report.
The Head of Rescue and Rehabilitation of the Gombe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Malam Muhammad Garba, confirmed the incident.
He said apart from residential buildings, households items and properties, several livestock were also consumed by the flood disaster.
Garba said the agency was still assessing the level of damages to ascertain the number of death, households items affected and properties destroyed by the flood.
