Real Madrid are preparing a massive £132m bid for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to blow Manchester United out of the race.
Manchester United want to sign Milinkovic-Savic and are aware of Lazio’s £100m valuation.
The Red Devils are said to be eyeing a deal for the Serbia international, which could cast Paul Pogba’s future into doubt.
But reports from Rome on Sunday suggest United will struggle to match Real’s determination over a deal.
According to newspaper Il Messaggero, the Bernabeu club are willing to better Lazio’s demands in order to stave off United’s rivalled interest.
Real are yet to appoint a new manager after Zinedine Zidane quit a fortnight ago.
But club president Florentino Perez is pushing ahead with transfers nonetheless.
Il Messaggero claim Real will agree a £132m deal for Milinkovic-Savic, plus £17.6m in bonuses.
The 23-year-old will be offered a £5.3m annual wage, which will rise over the contract’s five-year duration.
The player was asked about interest in his signature earlier this week and said: "I am trying to remain concentrated, even though every day I read something new about me.
"Obviously, I feel pressure on me and know that I'll have to live with this situation throughout the World Cup.”
